Our first concert and residency was at First Flight Elementary for the Kindergarten class. It was a great beginning and so appropriate that our public musical life started in a teaching environment, where we both learned about music when we were kids. For several years Lou taught private guitar lessons
at The Music Store in Kitty Hawk.
Lou teaches the Music Club at Ocracoke School and directs the "Pep
Band"
along with Kitty Mitchell.
Marcy is active in the Christian Breast Cancer Support Group and is an advocate for the American Cancer Society (Relay For Life,
Reach To Recovery,
Ambassador for Dare County).
Once a year in October the children lead the Sunday worship service, Children’s Sabbath, at the Ocracoke
United Methodist Church. The children are responsible for every aspect of the service from prelude, offering and postlude music to sermons and prayers. They do a fantastic job and leave
the congregation in tears and smile, with a full heart. They do a great job!
Along with a gang of singers of all ages we have two guitarists, one bass player,
three pianists, three flutists and fiddle player.
They also have special programs for Christmas, Easter, Girl Scout Sunday, Boy Scout Sunday and Vacation Bible School.

Both Marcy and Lou have taught residencies during Arts Week. Lou instructed, demonstrated and produced a music/sound recording workshop while Marcy offered a sub-workshop of lyrical songwriting. Several students elected to take the songwriting workshop and one group wrote a song and recorded it on Thursday, with their classmates playing all the instrumentation “in the studio” while they sang the vocal tracks. The CD recording of their
song “Chiming Heart” was played for the Friday-morning Assembly
for the school, families and community. Original hip-hop and techno
recordings by the students were played for the crowd along with rowdy
covers of “Taking Care Of Business” and “Red House” played live and
loud. |
Marcy has taught a songwriting seminar at NCCAT (NC Center for the
Advancement of Teaching, Ocracoke Campus) and is scheduled to teach
songwriting "in residence" at Ocracoke School during Arts Week 2009. |
